Project Details

The 3D MSOB/SERE Training Facility project constructed multiple buildings, site and roadway improvements, and utility/stormwater infrastructure within the Stones Bay area of Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune.

The project site is approximately 45 acres and includes approximately 3,800 LF of gravity sewer, a duplex sewer pump station, approximately 3,850 LF of force main, and approximately 8,225 LF of waterlines along with other site features and amenities.

The training facility was originally designed and constructed as part of an area wide master plan. Cape Fear Engineering was responsible for performing feasibility studies for utility infrastructure improvements to serve current and future development needs. Multiple utility routing options were analyzed to provide the most cost effective and lowest maintenance design alternative. A sewer pump station was designed and permitted for initial flow conditions but has been sized and configured to accommodate anticipated buildout flows with minimal pump station infrastructure replacements or upgrades.

Responsibilities + Solutions

Cape Fear Engineering’s responsibilities included design survey, utility design, and utility permitting along with stormwater management design/permitting, erosion control design/permitting, and roadway design/transportation management plans.

Cape Fear Engineering provided construction documents including plans, specifications, and design analysis with calculations for all aspects of civil site and utility work associated with the project. Water Extension, Gravity Sanitary Sewer Extension, Erosion and Sedimentation Control and State Stormwater permits were applied for and obtained from NCDEQ. Cape Fear Engineering also provided environmental assessment services due to the proximity of jurisdictional wetlands, a historical firing range, and potential habitat for endangered species.

Throughout construction Cape Fear Engineering has provided periodic construction observations and inspections of utility installation and will be responsible for providing Professional Engineer’s Certifications to NCDEQ for water distribution, sewer collection, and stormwater management permits.
