Project Details
North Carolina’s first permanent county prison was constructed in 1915 in New Hanover County and housed 200-inmates.
The new facility has a population of approximately 400-long term inmates. The new facility is located on 150-acres in northern New Hanover County and replaced the older existing jail facilities.
Cape Fear Engineering provided a myriad of survey services for this project and worked closely with New Hanover County Engineering Department, the project architect and design team as well as several construction firms that provided the buildings and infrastructure required for this $55M dollar project.
Cape Fear Engineering was contracted very early in the project development to provide updated boundary survey, existing conditions and topographic survey, heritage tree survey and wetland mapping to be utilized for the base map of the project. As the project progressed, additional services were provided that included off-site utility corridor surveys, natural gas line easement surveys, wetland mitigation surveys and easements, monitoring well locations and survey and corridor surveying for the new entrance road to serve the project.

Cape Fear Engineering was responsible for complete construction surveying and layout as well as field engineering as required for conflict resolution.
Services provided included staking clearing limits and rough grading, monitoring for foundation pre-loading, foundation pile stake out and as-builts, layout of pre-cast housing modules for multiple levels, building layout, roadway and utility staking and wetland pond layout to meet permit conditions. The services were provided for many different contractors and sub-contractors throughout the construction of the jail project. During the construction phase it was very common to have our survey crews on-site every day providing various services.
Cape Fear Engineering also provided full as-builts of the new facility and infrastructure. These as-builts were utilized to verify facility compliance with ADA and design considerations as well as certifications for utilities required for project closeout.
