Project Details
Tarawa Terrace II Elementary School is located at the Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune.
The project included an approximately 44,055 square foot addition to the existing elementary school, a new access road, a surface parking lot, a bus drop off loop, an enlarged dumpster enclosure, mechanical enclosure, fire access lane, new and upgraded playgrounds, utility extensions, stormwater management, BMP’s, and erosion and sedimentation control measures.
Challenge
The project had a short design and construction timeframe due to the unexpected early closure of Tarawa Terrace I Elementary School as a result of tornado damage.
Responsibilities + Solutions
Cape Fear Engineering’s responsibilities included design survey, site layout, utility design, and utility permitting along with stormwater management design/permitting, erosion control design/permitting, landscaping plans, and playground layouts.
Cape Fear Engineering provided construction documents including plans, specifications, and design analysis with calculations for all aspects of civil site and utility work associated with the project. Water Extension, Gravity Sanitary Sewer Extension, Erosion and Sedimentation Control and State Stormwater permits were applied for and obtained from NCDEQ.
Coordination with the Base Environmental Management Department of site layout and demolition was required as there were monitoring wells onsite due to existing groundwater contamination.
Throughout construction Cape Fear Engineering provided periodic construction observations and inspections of utility installation and has provided Professional Engineer’s Certifications to NCDEQ for water distribution, sewer collection, and stormwater management permits.
